WNCCHS McDowell Health Center Welcomes New Provider

Meet Claire Thetford, PA-C

MARION, N.C. — McDowell Health Center has added physician assistant Claire Thetford, PA-C, to its primary care team.

Thetford joined the center in October and is now seeing patients of all ages. She provides family medicine, women’s health services and support for both physical and mental wellness.

Thetford has been practicing as a physician assistant since 2021 and has spent the past several years caring for patients in Western North Carolina. A McDowell County resident, she is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University’s Master of Physician Assistant Studies program and has lived in North Carolina since 2009. Her approach emphasizes patient education, meeting people where they are and helping individuals take an active role in their health.

“Patients can expect a provider who is down-to-earth, personable and focused on their individual care,” Thetford said. “I strive to give patients the tools they need to take charge of their physical health. I want my patients to feel comfortable approaching me with their medical concerns and know their voice is heard.”

McDowell Health Center is the county’s only community health center. As part of Western North Carolina Community Health Services (WNCCHS), it welcomes patients with or without insurance, accepts Medicaid and Medicare and offers a sliding-fee discount program. The center provides primary care, behavioral health, prenatal care and care management, and has an on-site pharmacy with discount medications for eligible patients.

“WNCCHS is known for providers focused on patient-centered care and I’m excited to join the team,” Thetford said.
